Dutch mint

The scientific name of this plant is *Mentha spicata*, commonly known as spearmint. It belongs to the family Polygonaceae, though it's more commonly associated with the mint family Lamiaceae. This is a perennial herb that typically grows to about 45 cm in height.

Germination takes between 8 to 12 days, and the plant reaches maturity in approximately 70 to 90 days. It produces lilac-colored flowers, which bloom in spikes similar to lavender, usually around 10 cm long. These flowers grow in clusters that spread outward from the center, but there is no central blade in each cluster.

Spearmint is native to Europe and the Mediterranean region. It resembles peppermint but has shorter, more upright stems and is more branched. Its leaves are bright green, narrow, and elongated, with no petiole or only a very short one—this is one of the key differences from peppermint. The leaves are directly attached to the stems.

Cultivation: Spearmint thrives in well-drained, sandy loam or deep loam soil in a sunny and well-ventilated location. Seeds should be sown evenly on peat-based soil, lightly covered, and kept moist. Germination occurs faster at temperatures between 20–25°C. Once seedlings emerge, they should be exposed to light quickly to prevent leggy growth. The planting soil should be rich, moist, and well-drained. If sufficient sunlight is available, it can also be grown indoors.

Uses: Spearmint contains compounds such as menthol and acetyl methyl carvone, giving it a strong, refreshing aroma. It has various medicinal properties, including antipyretic, anthelmintic, and digestive benefits. It helps reduce flatulence and supports digestion. The leaves can be used in sauces, vinegars, salads, desserts, or even made into candy. Peppermint oil is widely used for its cooling and invigorating effects, and it’s popular in beverages, cigarettes, toothpaste, and medicines. It can also help alleviate nausea and vomiting. With its aromatic and versatile nature, spearmint is a valuable herb in both culinary and therapeutic applications.
