It’s Almost Transfer Season
So, like so many other Coast Guard families right now, we're in that frustrating limbo known as "waiting for orders." It's that time of year when everyone is anxiously hoping their dream assignment makes it through the approval process, but honestly, it feels like a game of chance sometimes. We submitted our "dream sheet" months ago, listing our top picks across the country, but now we're left wondering if any of those will pan out—or if we'll get stuck somewhere else entirely.
I hate this part of the process more than anything. On one hand, I'm itching to dive into planning mode because that’s just who I am—a planner through and through. But on the other hand, I can't even begin until I know where we're headed. In the meantime, I've been tackling some much-needed closet cleaning—something I've been putting off forever. It's boring work, but it's also kind of therapeutic. Plus, it helps ensure we don’t end up lugging unnecessary junk around with us again.
The hardest part isn’t just the uncertainty; it’s the conversations. Everyone wants to know where we’ll be going next, including our own families, who have grown accustomed to our ever-changing addresses. They’re supportive, of course, but after hearing about each potential location multiple times, I can only imagine they're secretly hoping we pick somewhere nearby. And then there are our local friends—lovely people, truly—but I can tell they’re starting to dread hearing about another move. I get it. It’s hard to stay engaged when you know the conversation is bound to end with you saying goodbye soon.

Even though I might sound a bit grumpy (and maybe I am), I don’t want anyone to think this life is unbearable. Far from it! My husband loves his job, and I love being part of the Coast Guard community. Sure, moving stinks, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to explore new places and cultures. Every family faces its own set of challenges, and for us, this is just part of the package. If anything, I’m grateful for the experiences we’ve had—and the ones still ahead of us.
For now, I’m clinging to the hope that one day soon, we’ll get that call from our detailer confirming our new home base. Until then, I’ll keep cleaning closets, crossing my fingers, and dreaming about the adventures to come. And hey, if you happen to see this post after we finally get our orders, feel free to remind me of how excited I was to complain about the whole thing. I promise not to hold it against you!
