Analysis of Causes of Poor Coloring of Tomato

There are many reasons for the poor coloring of cherry tomatoes, which are summarized as high temperature, strong light, excessive nitrogen fertilizer application, and insufficient potassium fertilizer application.

One is that the temperature in the shed is too high. The process of coloring cherry tomato fruits is the process of chlorophyll decomposition and the formation of lycopene and carotenoids. When the temperature in the booth is too high or too low, the formation of lycopene is inhibited. In general, when the temperature in the greenhouse is higher than 30°C, the formation of lycopene is affected. The author found in many arch sheds, due to the previous days even more cloudy days, many vegetable farmers have removed the shade net, resulting in the shed temperature above 40 °C, a long time high temperature will inevitably lead to poor cherry tomato coloring. The author suggested that the vegetable farmers re-cover the shaded nets that were removed to ensure that the greenhouse temperature is suitable for the normal growth of cherry tomatoes.

The second is that the light is too strong. In the shed, the author found that as long as the fruit is covered by leaves or shady parts, cherry tomatoes are generally better colored, and the fruits that are completely exposed to sunlight or sunny are yellow. This phenomenon explains that too strong light will also inhibit the formation of lycopene, resulting in poor coloration of the fruit. In this regard, the author suggests that vegetable farmers should pay attention to the use of shade nets on sunny days and try to increase their air outlets. In addition, the leaves should not be excessive, and the leaves can be used to cover the fruits and avoid the poor coloration caused by excessive illumination.

Third, excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer and insufficient use of potash fertilizer. The author understands that due to the high temperature, vegetable farmers often pay attention to the application of nitrogen fertilizer when fertilizing, and accordingly neglected the application of potassium fertilizer, which also causes poor coloration of cherry tomatoes. Excessive nitrogen, cherry tomatoes prone to green shoulder phenomenon; and potassium deficiency is prone to yellow-green fruit shoulder. Therefore, potassium fertilizer should be added during the fruit expansion period, and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer should be reduced.
