Pine picking technology

Pine resin serves as a crucial raw material for producing rosin, turpentine oil, rosin essence, and rosin amine. Its applications span across various industries, including light industry, chemicals, metallurgy, defense, medicine, and electronics. In China, key species like Masson pine (Pinus massoniana), Yunnan pine (Pinus yunnanensis), Simao pine, South Asian pine, and Taiwan pine (Pinus taiwanensis) are primary sources of this resin. Here’s how to harvest it effectively while maintaining sustainable practices: Before starting the process, preparation is essential. Fat collection enterprises should map out suitable forest areas, equip themselves with proper extraction tools, stay informed about market trends, and secure contracts with buyers. When selecting trees for resin tapping, aim for those at least 20 cm in diameter and around 1.3 meters off the ground. The chosen surface should face the sun and exhibit healthy foliage. For newly tapped trees, cuts begin 2.2 meters above the ground. Trees previously used for resin extraction can be tapped again the following year, aligning the new cut with last year's. On older trees where the base has already been cut, focus on the upper portion of prior cuts. Ensure that the total width of the cut doesn’t surpass 40% of the tree's height, with annual lengths not exceeding 17 cm. After marking the cut, carefully remove rough bark using a spatula—without damaging the inner tender bark. The area cleared should extend 6.5 cm wider and 13 cm longer than the actual cut. Start by creating a central groove with a triangular blade, forming a channel 20 cm long, 2 cm deep, and 4 cm wide, perpendicular to the ground. This groove should taper outward slightly to facilitate smooth resin flow into collectors positioned beneath via a grease guide. Adopt the "shallow blade light cut" technique when adding side channels. These should run parallel to and equidistant from the central groove. Always cover the collector during maintenance to avoid contamination from debris. Regularly check collectors monthly to ensure cleanliness and prevent water accumulation. Avoid using metal tools when handling resin to preserve its quality. Sustainable practices dictate the use of single-sided tapping methods, typically performed before temperatures drop below 10°C. Prioritize protecting resource health by avoiding trees showing signs of disease, pest infestation, or significant damage. Such trees risk further weakening if tapped.
