Morphological characteristics:

Perennial climbing herbs. Most of the roots are yellow and red, with red or pale red cross sections. Stem with 4 edges, raw barbs on edges. The leaves are usually 4-rounded, long-stalked, nearly triangular-ovate leaves, 2–6 cm long, 1–4 cm wide, and 5 basal veins. Flowers small, cymes conical; corolla pale yellow, 5-lobed; stamens 5, with corolla tube inserted into throat; ovary inferior, 2-celled, style 2-lobed. Berry spherical, blue and black when cooked.

Flowering from September to October, fruiting in November.

Habitat and distribution:

It is mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, and a few in temperate zones are often found in miscellaneous forests, in bushes, roadsides, gullies, and hillside grasses.
