Study found that a genetic mutation increases the risk of stroke

The study found that a genetic mutation increases the risk of stroke. A recent study by Danish scientists found that a common genetic variant affecting iron metabolism can increase the risk of stroke in carriers.
According to a report on the 27th of the British "New Scientist" magazine online, researchers at the University of Lehigh University in Denmark found that the gene called HFE, once called a subtle variation of the H63D mutation, will lead to the blood of the variant gene carrier. The iron element in the excess enters the cell, because this phenomenon is usually not easy to find, and some people with this genetic variation will suffer from cirrhosis.
To investigate whether this genetic variant has an effect on the nervous system, the researchers collected 9000 DNA samples from Denmark and tracked their health for 24 years. About 400 participants had cerebral ischemic stroke during this period. Different versions will appear after the HFE gene mutation. Of the 156 participants who carried two variants of the HFE gene variant, 10% died of this stroke during the study period. In comparison, only 4% of participants who carried a variant version or did not carry a variant version died of a stroke.
After considering factors such as age, gender, and cholesterol levels, the researchers concluded that people with two variants of the HFE gene had a 180% higher risk of stroke than those who did not.
The person in charge of the study speculated that the H63D mutation in this gene would cause excessive iron in the blood to enter the cell, which may accelerate the formation of dangerous blood clots in the blood vessels, thereby interrupting blood circulation in the brain. However, this study has not found any relationship between H63D mutations and intravascular clot formation.
The researchers believe that genetic testing of H63D mutations can help identify people at higher risk of stroke who can take medications such as statins or aspirin in time to reduce the risk of blood clots.
