From June to September each year, high temperatures and heavy rainfall often lead to the underutilization of solar greenhouses and winter greenhouses. To maximize their use, summer sheds can be transformed into ideal spaces for growing straw mushrooms. With proper management, one mu of land can yield up to 3,000 kilograms of straw mushrooms, generating an income of approximately 10,000 yuan.
The timing of straw mushroom cultivation is crucial. If sown too early, the low temperatures in early summer may hinder growth. Sowing too late, on the other hand, could interfere with the production of autumn and winter vegetables. Based on practical experience, the best period for cultivation is between June and August, when conditions are most favorable.
After the winter and spring wolfberry crops are harvested, the greenhouse should be thoroughly cleaned. Remove all plant stalks and debris from the field, then loosen the soil by digging it 2-3 days in advance. Level the ground, water the base thoroughly, and disinfect the greenhouse using sulfur fumigation. Additionally, apply trichlorfon to ensure the soil is free from pathogens before planting.
Straw mushrooms can grow without covering the soil, but covering the culture material with a suitable layer of soil helps retain moisture and provides essential water for the mushrooms' development. This method significantly improves both the quality and yield of the harvest. The soil used for covering should be rich, loose, and have good water retention. Avoid using clay or sandy soil. Instead, opt for moist but not overly wet soil.
When planting, break the cultivated mushroom pieces into small sections measuring 1-2 square centimeters. Using the seed sowing method, spread the spores evenly into the culture material at intervals of 8-10 cm, placing about 10-15 grams of spores per hole. After sowing, cover the culture material with a thin layer of soil. Arrange the culture material in a turtle-back or wavy pattern, with ridge thickness of 15 cm, and 5–8 cm of material on each side. The amount of culture material should be around 15–20 kg per square meter.
Cover the material with soil: 1 cm thick over the ridges and 3–5 cm in the grooves. Once covered, use a wooden stick with a diameter of 2 cm to poke ventilation holes. Place the holes 10 cm apart, and ensure they penetrate deep enough to reach the center of the material pile. This allows for proper air circulation and supports healthy mushroom growth.
Isolated Whey Protein
Whey protein then undergoes another process to make one of three main types:
1. Concentrate: Products with whey protein concentrate vary widely in their protein, lactose and fat content. Whey protein concentrate is in many protein drinks, bars and nutritional products. It’s also used in infant formula.
2. Isolate: This type is consistently high in protein and low in fat or lactose. You may see it listed on the labels of protein supplements, such as bars and drinks. Whey protein isolate may be a suitable choice for people who are lactose intolerant — but don’t try any of these if you have a milk allergy.
3. Hydrolysate: Also known as hydrolyzed whey protein, whey hydrolysate is the easiest to digest. It’s gentle on digestion because its long protein chains, called peptides, are pre-broken down into shorter ones. Specialized infant formulas often use hydrolyzed whey protein. You may also see it in medical supplements for nutritional deficiencies.
Whey protein may be useful for:
· Muscle building: Muscles love protein, especially complete proteins like whey. “Whey protein contains branched-chain amino acids, a specific type of amino acid that helps with muscle building,” Smith says.
· Wound healing: The amino acids in whey protein help repair skin and tissues from wounds or surgery.
· Weight gain and nutritional boost: People who need to gain weight can benefit from whey protein. It’s also helpful if a person has a long-term illness and needs extra nutrition. “If you can’t get enough protein from whole food sources, a whey protein supplement can help,” says Smith. “It’s beneficial for people who have chewing or swallowing disorders or a lack of appetite.”
