The Japanese wax worm, often referred to as the scale insect, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. These pests feed on the sap of leaves and young shoots, producing a sticky substance that leads to sooty mold growth. This mold can interfere with photosynthesis, weaken the tree, and result in premature leaf drop and fruit loss. In severe infestations, trees may become completely defoliated or even die. To manage this pest, chemical control is effective during the nymph stage, before they develop their waxy covering. During the nymphal period, sprays such as 25% imidacloprid at 800–1000 times dilution, 50% malathion at 1000–1500 times, 50% chlorpyrifos at 400–500 times, or 50% dichlorvos at 800–1000 times can be applied every 7–10 days for 2–3 applications. Additionally, biological control methods are beneficial, as natural predators like ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps help reduce populations naturally. Another common pest in pomegranate orchards is the Pomegranate Striata moth, also known as the flower window moth. It is widespread in most pomegranate-growing regions of China. The larvae damage both new and old shoots, weakening the tree’s vitality and reducing fruit yield and quality. In extreme cases, entire plants can be killed. For control, regular monitoring of pomegranate trees during the growing season is essential. Infested shoots should be pruned from the base of the last feeding hole to remove the larvae. Chemical treatments are also effective: during the egg-hatching period, sprays such as 1000 times diluted cypermethrin, 1000 times diluted dichlorvos emulsion, or 2.5% chlorpyrifos at 3000 times dilution can be used. Once larvae have entered the shoots, dichlorvos can be injected into the tunnels using syringes or similar tools. Alternatively, cotton balls soaked in the solution can be placed into the holes, followed by sealing them with clay to suffocate the larvae. Proper management and early intervention are crucial to prevent serious damage and ensure healthy plant growth.
