Medical needles developed by the Japanese-made hair Research team led by Prof. Yoshida Yoshida of the Faculty of Engineering, Toyo University, Japan, used human hair to successfully produce medical painless needles. Compared with metal needles, such hair needles have toughness and are not easily broken. The technology is currently being patented.
There are two types of hair needles. One is an electrode needle for observing the activity of nerve cells through an electrode, and the other is a hollow needle left in the body for artificial dialysis. These two types of needles are different. The needles developed by the research team are respectively coated with metal and resin film on the hair, which can be used as an electrode needle. After opening a hollow hole with a diameter of 1 mm inside the hair, it can also be used as an infusion needle for transferring liquid. Using unique laser processing technology, researchers can process the needle portion without damage to the tissue. Hair is about 70 microns to 120 microns in diameter and is painless to use. It is also suitable for capturing moving targets and not easily damaging blood vessels. In addition, the needle can be burned after use, and medical waste will never appear.
The electrode needle is expected to be put on the market two years later, and the hollow needle is expected to capture 1 mm hollow technology within this year. However, there are still many problems in the development of these two hair needles. For example, when the electrode needle is pulled out of the body, the gold plating on the surface may peel off into the human body and is not suitable for multiple use; the hollow needle is treated with a chlorine solvent. It is difficult to maintain the stability of 1 mm diameter and the like.
The research team is analyzing the composition and individual differences of hair, and continues to deepen the research on needle making technology, with a view to its early practical application.
