Thermostat use and maintenance
The thermostat plays a crucial role in regulating the flow of coolant through the radiator based on the temperature of the engine's cooling system. Over time, it can malfunction, leading to overheating or overcooling of the engine, which may result in reduced power output and increased fuel consumption. Regular inspection and maintenance of the thermostat are essential to ensure optimal performance and extend the life of the cooling system.
After starting the engine, you should check the radiator by opening its cap. If the coolant is still and not circulating, the thermostat is likely functioning correctly. However, if the coolant is already moving, it could indicate that the thermostat is not working properly. When the engine temperature is below 70°C, the thermostat’s wax element remains contracted, keeping the main valve closed. As the temperature rises above 80°C, the wax expands, causing the main valve to open gradually, allowing coolant to circulate and helping the engine reach its normal operating temperature.
During the warming-up phase, the temperature should rise quickly at first. Once it reaches around 80°C, the rate of temperature increase should slow down, indicating that the thermostat is working as intended. If the temperature rises too quickly and then suddenly boils over due to pressure, it may mean the main valve is stuck in the closed position. When the temperature gauge shows between 70°C and 80°C, you can open the radiator cap and drain valve. If the water feels hot, the thermostat is likely working properly. However, if the water is cool and there is little or no flow from the inlet or outlet, it suggests that the thermostat’s main valve is not opening correctly, preventing proper coolant circulation.
It's important to perform these checks regularly, especially before long trips or during seasonal changes. A faulty thermostat can cause serious engine damage, so don’t ignore any signs of abnormal cooling system behavior. Keeping your thermostat in good condition ensures better engine efficiency, fuel economy, and overall reliability.
