Birth Rabbit Management Technology

Proper care for newborn rabbits and their mothers is essential to ensure healthy development and survival. The first step is to ensure that puppies receive colostrum within 6-10 hours after birth, as it provides vital antibodies. If the mother rabbit refuses to nurse, artificial feeding methods can be used. Secure the mother in a farrowing box or a feeding enclosure, gently hold her neck with one hand and support her back with the other to keep her calm. Place her near the nipples of the mother and encourage nursing. After several attempts, she should begin to feed naturally. Always check if the puppies are full—look for a rounded belly, rosy color, and peaceful sleep. Feed once daily, or twice a day if the litter is small. In cases of large litters or mastitis, consider finding foster mothers. Ensure that the foster mothers have given birth no more than three days apart. To prevent rejection, apply urine or a special lotion to the puppies before placing them with the foster mother. Insulation and warmth are crucial during the early stages. Before giving birth, the mother will pull out her fur to build a nest. If she doesn’t do this naturally, assist by gently pulling the fur. Newborns are hairless, with closed ears and eyes, so they need constant warmth. Keep the temperature above 15°C in winter and spring, and maintain at least 30°C in the nesting area while the puppies are sleeping. Maintaining cleanliness is also important. Once the puppies start eating, move them to a nursery cage or box. In summer, use iron mesh around the cage to protect against insects and rodents. Clean the floor regularly, replacing it weekly. For lactating does, reduce concentrate feed two to three days before and after birth, and increase green feed. It’s recommended to give sulfathiazole tablets (one per day) or rhubarb injections (2 mg per day) for the first 3-4 days postpartum. Early feeding should begin when the rabbits are 16-18 days old. Offer small amounts of tender grass, soft feed, and milk-based mixtures. Adding ingredients like soybean residue and rice bran can improve nutrition. To prevent coccidiosis, include anti-parasitic agents such as chlorobenzene muscle. Weaning should be based on the puppies' growth, weight, and season. Puppies that are underdeveloped or born in winter may benefit from extended nursing. Typically, wean at 30-35 days. If there are multiple litters with varying sizes, separate the stronger from the weaker ones. The best weaning method is to keep the environment, food, and management unchanged, allowing the young rabbits to stay in the same cage without the mother. This reduces stress and supports a smoother transition.
