British survey said: less than 5 hours of sleep, the risk of heart disease is 1 times higher

A recent British study revealed that sleeping less than five hours a night significantly increases the risk of heart disease, with some findings suggesting a doubling of the risk. Researchers from the UK have long been investigating the impact of sleep on health, and their latest findings reinforce the importance of getting enough rest. The research, led by Professor Kapuqiao from Warwick Medical School, followed over 10,000 civil servants aged 35 to 55 for more than a decade. The results showed that individuals who slept five hours or less per night were more than twice as likely to die from heart-related issues compared to those who averaged seven hours of sleep each night. Additionally, the study found that insufficient sleep increased the risk of death by 1.7 times compared to adequate sleep.

In a similar study conducted this summer by American scientists at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, it was discovered that even short-term sleep deprivation—just five days of reduced sleep—can weaken heart function and raise the risk of cardiovascular diseases. These findings highlight the growing concern around sleep patterns and their effects on overall health.

Building on previous research, British experts now emphasize that poor sleep is not just a cause of tiredness and irritability—it can contribute to serious conditions like obesity, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, heart disease, aging, and even mental health issues. Moreover, the study also uncovered that sleeping too much may also be harmful. People who regularly slept more than nine hours a night had a higher mortality rate, which researchers linked to potential underlying health problems such as depression or cancer-related fatigue.

Based on these findings, Professor Kapuqiao recommends that adults aim for about seven hours of sleep each night to maintain optimal health. As sleep continues to be a critical factor in well-being, these studies serve as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing rest in our daily lives.
