At present, the most popular sprouts in the market include pea sprouts, followed by radish, mung bean, and buckwheat sprouts. Although they differ slightly in flavor and texture, their cultivation methods are quite similar. Growing sprouts at home is not only fun but also a great way to enjoy fresh, nutritious food.
The first step in growing sprouts is selecting high-quality seeds. It's important to choose fresh seeds with a germination rate of over 95%, high purity, and full grains. Avoid any seeds that look shriveled, discolored, or contaminated. Using quality seeds ensures better growth and higher yield.
Once you've selected your seeds, the next step is soaking them. After washing the seeds with clean water (2-3 times) at around 20-30°C, place them in a container with water that's about 2-3 times the volume of the seeds. Soaking time varies depending on the type of seed. For example, peas usually need 18-24 hours, radishes take 6-8 hours, buckwheat needs 24-36 hours, and mung beans require 12-20 hours. After soaking, gently rub the seeds to remove the sticky coating, then drain off any excess water.
Next, prepare a flat-bottomed container and cover the bottom with a damp cloth or a layer of white paper. Place the soaked seeds evenly on top and cover them with another damp cloth. The ideal germination temperature depends on the sprout type: peas and mung beans thrive at 18-22°C, radishes and buckwheat at 23-26°C, and citron sprouts at 20-23°C. Within 48 hours, pea, mung bean, and citron sprouts should reach about 3 mm in length, while radishes will be ready after 24 hours.
The final step is sowing. Before planting, rinse the sprouting tray thoroughly. Then, line the bottom with one or two layers of white paper or old newspaper to help retain moisture. Spread the germinated seeds evenly across the tray. A typical tray size is 60x25 cm, with specific seed quantities per plate: 350-400 grams of peas, 150-170 grams of buckwheat, 80-100 grams of radishes, and 30-50 grams of mung beans. Once planted, cover the tray with a black plastic sheet to keep it dark and maintain humidity.
Peas should be kept at 18-23°C, buckwheat and radishes at 20-25°C, and mung beans at 20-23°C. After two days, the sprouts should grow to about 2-3 cm tall, and you can move them to a well-lit area to continue their growth. With proper care, you’ll have fresh, healthy sprouts ready to eat in just a few days.
