Licorice absorbs phosphide in wastewater

A recent study conducted in Thailand has revealed that planting licorice in wastewater treatment tanks can significantly improve water purification processes. Researchers from Chulalongkorn University discovered that licorice thrives in these environments, absorbing harmful substances such as phosphates with remarkable efficiency. In addition to its strong absorption capabilities, the plant also enhances oxygen levels in the water, which helps support a healthier aquatic ecosystem. Based on these findings, the research team suggested that local governments consider promoting the use of licorice in wastewater treatment systems as a sustainable and cost-effective solution. Licorice, commonly known as sweetroot, is a perennial herb belonging to the legume family. It is widely cultivated in Thailand, where it grows naturally in various regions. Although the quality of licorice may vary slightly depending on the growing conditions, it remains a valuable plant both for its medicinal properties and environmental benefits. This study highlights how traditional plants can play a key role in modern environmental management, offering an eco-friendly alternative to conventional treatment methods. By integrating natural solutions like licorice into wastewater systems, communities can work towards more sustainable and efficient water management practices.
