Related to pit trophy and brick pool culture method

The pit and brick pool method is an effective technique for cultivating several types of earthworms, including *Lumbricus terrestris* (ring hairs), *Eisenia fetida* (red wigglers), *Aporrectodea tuberculata* (labia genus), *Eisenia andrei* (ursinus genus), and *Acanthodrilus* species. These worms require a combination of organic matter and soil to thrive. While *Eisenia foetida* (Aiko Aishina) primarily feeds on organic waste, the others need to consume large amounts of soil to support their growth and activity. As a result, farmers can dig pits or construct brick pools in open areas or shaded spaces near homes for efficient breeding. The depth of these pits or pools typically ranges from 50 to 60 cm, and the size can be adjusted based on the scale of the operation—commonly between 2–3 square meters or up to 10–20 square meters. The process begins by layering fermented feed into the pit or pool. The first layer, about 15–20 cm thick, consists of organic material, followed by a 10 cm layer of soil. If there are more worms, additional layers of feed and soil can be added alternately, with each layer measuring around 10 cm. This layered approach helps maintain a balanced environment for the earthworms. Moisture levels are crucial for successful cultivation. *Lumbricus terrestris* thrives at around 30% soil moisture, while *Eisenia* species prefer 25–30%. *Acanthodrilus*, on the other hand, is more drought-resistant and can tolerate lower moisture levels, typically 22–25%. Regular monitoring and watering are necessary to ensure optimal conditions. In terms of yield, it's possible to culture approximately 2,000–3,000 earthworms per square meter, with an average weight of 5 grams each. This can result in a total harvest of 10–15 kilograms per square meter. Under ideal conditions, the density can reach up to 8,000 worms per square meter, weighing around 30 kilograms. This method not only maximizes space but also ensures a steady and sustainable production of high-quality earthworms for various agricultural and ecological purposes.
