Ten Notes on Planting Orchids

1. **Antibacterial Treatment for Wounds**: When repotting or dividing orchids, stems, leaves, and roots may get damaged. It's essential to apply a fungicide to the wounds first to prevent bacterial infections. After planting, it's safer to water the orchids every two to three days to avoid overwatering and promote healthy root development. 2. **Disinfect Old Pots**: While it's best to use new pots for planting orchids, reusing old ones is both economical and environmentally friendly. Before using them again, disinfect the pots with a suitable disinfectant solution to eliminate any pathogens that might harm your orchids. 3. **Avoid Overly Large Pots**: Planting small orchids in large pots can lead to poor air circulation and uneven moisture distribution. Too much growing medium can retain excess water, making it hard for the roots to dry out. This creates an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi, increasing the risk of root rot. 4. **Plant Blue Orchids Shallowly**: For blue orchids (like some Phalaenopsis varieties), avoid planting them too deep. Deep planting can cause the base to remain wet for long periods, leading to rot. When planting, make sure the base or pseudobulbs are exposed, not buried under the growing medium. 5. **Center the Sprouts**: When placing the orchid in the pot, don’t plant it in the center. Instead, position the sprouts in the middle so that as they grow, they will naturally fill the center of the pot. At first, it may look off-center, but this helps the plant develop evenly. 6. **Spread the Roots Evenly**: Ensure that the orchid’s roots are spread out in all directions rather than being clumped together. This allows each root to come into contact with the growing medium and improves air circulation, reducing the risk of root rot. 7. **Stabilize the Plant**: Orchids shouldn’t be planted too deeply, which can make them unstable. To keep the plant upright, use stakes, ties, or hooks to support it. This prevents movement that could damage the base or roots. 8. **Slightly Compact the Growing Medium**: The growing medium should allow good drainage and airflow, but it should also be lightly compacted. If it’s too loose, the roots won’t have proper support. The best way to compact is from the sides, not from the top, to avoid damaging the roots. 9. **Wait Before Watering**: After planting, especially if the roots were damaged during repotting, avoid watering for 3 to 5 days. This gives the plant time to heal and reduces the risk of infection. Unlike most plants, orchids benefit from a short period of dryness after transplanting. 10. **Avoid Direct Sunlight**: Newly potted orchids are sensitive and need to be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent dehydration. Place them in a warm, shaded area and mist the air occasionally to maintain humidity until they recover and resume normal growth.
