How to Use Cotton Straw to Ferment into a Matrix

Golden Baby Microbial Fermentability Bacteria is a natural compound fermentation bacterium first developed in China. The original strain was collected from the deep soil of mountainous jungles and refined using advanced techniques such as high-tech screening, purification, and rejuvenation. It combines the essence of top microbiology engineering technology from Europe, America, Japan, and South Korea. Golden Baby Fermentation Aid is a complex microbial community consisting of bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and actinomycetes, all of which are beneficial microorganisms. These microbes have strong abilities to decompose and digest organic matter during the fermentation process.

The various "functional microbes" do not antagonize each other; instead, they work together. Through biochemical reactions that occur as these microbes rapidly multiply, heat and metabolites accumulate, enabling the decomposition, deodorization, sterilization, and nutrient conversion of organic materials. This process helps achieve "harmless" and "resource-based" treatment of livestock manure like chicken, pig, and cattle waste, as well as other organic materials such as cotton straw, corn stalks, bark, fallen leaves, sawdust, and animal fur.

Fermenting Cotton Straw into a Matrix

Step 1: Preparation – Before fermentation, cotton straw must be pre-treated. Ideally, it should be crushed or cut into pieces no larger than 2 cm and turned into a fibrous form to aid in the fermentation process. One kilogram of Golden Baby Fermentation Agent can handle 3–4 cubic meters of material.

Step 2: Add Nutrient Solution – Prepare a urea solution by mixing 2.5 kg of urea with 150–200 kg of water, or use 250 kg of livestock manure to reduce costs. Evenly sprinkle this mixture over the straw and pile it into small heaps.

Step 3: Inoculate the Mixture – After the urea has been absorbed, cover the pile with a breathable material and let it sit for 24 hours. The next day, mix 1 kg of Golden Baby Fermentation Agent with 5 kg of rice bran to create a bacterial blend. This dilution (1 kg of starter into 6 kg of material) makes it easier to spread and also provides nutrients for the microbes. Spread this evenly across the pile and turn it thoroughly. This process is called "inoculation."

Note: Fresh rice bran is more nutritious and provides better aeration than old rice bran. If rice bran is unavailable, you can use wheat bran, corn flour, or similar alternatives.

Step 4: Adjust Moisture – The moisture content of the pile should be between 60% and 70%. To check if the moisture is right, grab a handful of the material. If it leaves a watermark but doesn’t drip, it’s just right. Too little water can slow down fermentation, while too much may cause anaerobic conditions and bad odors.

Step 5: Cover and Ventilate – Once the inoculation is complete, cover the pile with an air-permeable material and place it in a shaded, rain-protected area. Normally, after the fermentation starts, the temperature will rise to 55–60°C within 5–10 days. At this point, turn the pile once and repeat the process 2–3 times to complete the fermentation.

Step 6: Re-moisturize When Turning – As the temperature rises and heat accumulates, moisture in the pile evaporates. When turning the pile, add water as needed to maintain the ideal moisture level.

Through practical applications in cities across Beijing, Shanghai, Jilin, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hebei, Shanxi, and Shandong, it has been proven that using microbial fermentation agents and biotechnology can effectively ferment bark, straw, and leaves. While livestock manure is easier to handle, fermenting materials like bark and sawdust is a global challenge. Golden Baby’s biological starter is one of the most efficient and user-friendly solutions available. This method is both economically and environmentally beneficial, producing high-quality substrates for flower seedlings and edible fungi. It has gained widespread popularity and is now being promoted in many regions. Our products are also entering international markets such as the UK, USA, Australia, and Syria.
