Inland young crab high-yielding cultivation techniques

In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, particularly in the inland areas of Anhui and Jiangsu, many farmers have mastered the technique of raising around 200 kilograms of juvenile crabs from bigeye larvae. However, the yield per mu varies significantly, and the output per 500 grams of bigeye larvae also fluctuates. Over three years of cultivation, the author has managed to stabilize the yield at about 100 kg per mu, with approximately 75 kg of juvenile crabs produced from 500 grams of bigeye larvae. The key techniques used are outlined below. 1. **Selecting the Pond**: The pond should be around 3 mu in size. It is recommended to build a crab pond while using nylon gauze nets to protect the slopes. This helps prevent damage to the pond during the second year and ensures better growth of the crab seedlings. A 1-meter-high dense net should surround the pond to keep out frogs and other predators. In larger breeding ponds, scarecrows can be used to deter birds. 2. **Clearing the Pond**: For newly dug ponds, 30 cm of water per acre should be treated with 30 kg of calcified water. If it's an existing pond, after selling the seedlings, fill it with 1 meter of water. Add 35–50 kg of bleaching powder, wait a week for the chlorine to dissipate, or else it may harm the young crabs. If pyrethroids were used, avoid draining the water. Instead, reapply 30–50 kg of calcified water 15 days later. Use quicklime with a detoxifier 7–15 days after clearing to remove any remaining toxins, which is essential for high yield and good crab size. 3. **Planting Aquatic Vegetation**: After clearing the pond, plant aquatic plants such as submerged elodea, borage grass, black leaf algae, goldfish, floating water peanuts, water lettuce, and duckweed. Submerged plants should cover more than 70% of the pond bottom, while floating plants should occupy over 50% of the water surface. 4. **Feeding Bigeye Larvae**: Earthworms and bigeye larvae should be introduced in sync with the weather. Based on several years of experience, the best time to introduce seedlings is between May 20 and June 20. It’s preferable to release them after June, with 750–1250 grams per mu. Check the weather forecast and ensure three consecutive clear days before releasing. If rain occurs, add oxygen pellets to the water at night, 200 g per mu. If the water becomes cloudy, use a water clarifier after the rain stops. Before introducing the larvae, feed soy milk (500 g per mu) for two days, keeping the water depth at 30 cm. Once the larvae are in, place them in a bowl for a few minutes, then soak them in a solution for 5 minutes to reduce the risk of early mortality. After 8 p.m., add 200 g of oxygen per acre to support metamorphosis and improve survival rates. 5. **Breeding Management** (1) **Water Quality Control**: Monitor dissolved oxygen levels when the bigeye larvae are introduced. After metamorphosis, gradually increase the water depth to 80–100 cm. Maintain stable water levels and change water no more than 10 cm per day, preferably in the evening. Use biological agents like EM water and ecological products to maintain clean and healthy water. Crabs raised this way tend to be strong, with green shells and no ciliates or algae. (2) **Feeding Strategy**: Fertilizing the water to grow live bait is essential. After the larvae are introduced, mix 500 g of soybean milk with 500 g of cooked fish gills and feed them after metamorphosis. Use No. 1 starter feed at 2–3 times the weight of the larvae, feeding three times daily: morning, afternoon, and midnight. When they reach the third stage, switch to No. 2 compound feed. One month later, feed cooked or sprouted wheat twice a day, ensuring no leftovers. Adjust feeding based on weather conditions. Long-term use of Luyuan raw hydrolyzate mix promotes fast growth, resulting in high survival rates. Juvenile crabs raised this way grow quickly and are ready for market early in spring. 6. **Harvesting and Selling**: By late October, pile up water peanuts in the pond, with each pile weighing at least 20 kg and at least 30 piles per mu. When customers need seedlings, use a net to gently collect them from the peanut clusters, avoiding damage to the crabs. Before moving them, perform a simple treatment to prevent diseases like limb rot, shell rot, and water mold.
