Raise rabbits with safety "two cautions"

One important practice is to use antibiotics carefully. In the prevention and treatment of rabbit diseases, the proper administration of medications can be life-saving, while misuse can lead to serious consequences. Rabbits are herbivores that do not have a ruminant digestive system, but their gut flora and digestion share some similarities with ruminants. For example, improper use of antibiotics like oxytetracycline or tetracycline tablets can disrupt the normal bacterial balance in the digestive tract, leading to side effects or even death in affected rabbits. Therefore, it's crucial to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use. If antibiotics are required, oral options such as sulfamethoxazole tablets should be considered. However, when a more potent treatment is needed, injectable antibiotics may be a better choice. It’s always recommended to consult a veterinarian before administering any medication to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Another key point is to be cautious when using raw tofu residue. Tofu residue is an inexpensive by-product of tofu production, which can help lower the cost of raising rabbits. However, if used improperly, it can cause health issues. The residue contains high levels of crude protein—up to 29.8% on a dry matter basis. But because it hasn’t undergone a cooking process during tofu production, harmful substances like trypsin inhibitors remain. These compounds can interfere with digestion, reduce protein absorption, and negatively impact the rabbit's health. In severe cases, they may lead to diarrhea, poor growth, or even poisoning. To minimize risks, it’s advisable to either cook the residue before feeding or limit its use in the rabbit diet. Always monitor your rabbits closely when introducing new feed sources.
