Raise rabbits with safety "two cautions"

One important practice is to use antibiotics carefully. In the prevention and treatment of rabbit diseases, improper drug use can lead to serious consequences, potentially putting some rabbits at risk and causing unnecessary losses. Rabbits are herbivores that do not have a ruminant digestive system, but their digestion shares some similarities with ruminants. For example, the misuse of antibiotics like oxytetracycline or tetracycline tablets can disrupt the normal gut flora, leading to side effects or even death in affected rabbits. When antibiotics are necessary, it's better to choose oral antibacterial agents such as sulfamethoxazole tablets, and always consult a veterinarian before administration. If systemic treatment is required, injections may be more appropriate. Oral medication should never be used without professional guidance.
Another key point is to be cautious when using raw tofu residue. Tofu residue is a by-product of soy milk processing and is often used as a low-cost feed ingredient for rabbits. However, if not handled properly, it can lead to health issues and financial loss. The residue contains high levels of crude protein—up to 29.8% on a dry matter basis. But because it isn't cooked during processing, harmful substances like trypsin inhibitors remain in the product. These compounds can reduce the digestibility of proteins, leading to poor nutrient absorption. As a result, the proteins in the residue are not fully utilized by the rabbit’s body. In severe cases, this can cause digestive problems such as diarrhea or even poisoning. Therefore, it’s essential to process or cook the residue before feeding it to rabbits to ensure safety and nutritional value.
