Cucumbers are one of the most popular vegetables grown by farmers, but they face a serious threat from a disease known as "rotten vines" or "wilt." This condition is particularly feared because it can cause entire rows of cucumber plants to wither and die within just a few days. The disease typically occurs when the plants start producing a lot of fruit, and it's triggered by high temperatures and humidity. Symptoms include dark, oily spots on the stems, which may appear oval or prism-shaped, pale grayish-white, and slightly sunken. These spots often secrete an amber-like fluid, and when dry, the affected areas shrink and develop numerous small black spots.
In addition to damaging the stems, the disease also affects the leaves and fruits. On the leaves, lesions usually appear as circular or V-shaped spots, ranging in color from pale brown to yellow-brown, with small black dots inside. The fruits, especially when young, can become infected through the flower buds, leading to soft, light brown flesh and internal rotting.
The main sources of infection are contaminated seeds and soil. Rainstorms and irrigation water act as carriers, spreading the pathogen across the field. The bacteria enter through stomata, water pores, or wounds, and infected seeds can directly harm the cotyledons. High soil moisture, frequent contact between stems and water, and high humidity in the field all increase the risk of infection. Overcrowded planting, excessive nitrogen fertilizer, poor air circulation, or insufficient nutrients can further worsen the situation, making the plants more vulnerable to disease.
To prevent this issue, farmers should avoid continuous cropping and choose well-drained, fertile land. Adding organic matter to the soil and practicing proper spacing can help reduce the spread of the disease. Before sowing, seeds should be disinfected using a 0.3% solution of Boline. Once the disease appears, it's crucial to apply fungicides immediately. Recommended treatments include:
1. 600–800 times dilution of Benomyl or Chlorothalonil (40% suspension).
2. Baoning (60% Duofu WP) diluted 800–1000 times.
3. Thiophanate-methyl (70% wettable powder) at 800–1200 times.
All fields should be sprayed every 4–5 days for 2–3 consecutive rounds. Additionally, applying the same solutions directly to the affected stem areas, at a concentration of 50–100 times, can significantly improve results. By taking these proactive steps, farmers can effectively manage and control the spread of this destructive disease.
