In winter, proper feeding and management are essential for maintaining the health and productivity of cattle. First, prepare the roughage by cutting it into 8–10 cm pieces and washing it thoroughly before ammoniation. To improve nutritional value, apply an ammonia treatment by mixing 25 kg of a 6%–10% urea solution with every 50 kg of chopped roughage. Place the mixture in a sealed container or pit, cover it with plastic film, and let it ferment for 1–1.5 months. After this period, the material is ready for use as feed.
Next, manage feeding schedules carefully. During cold weather, provide feed at regular intervals—both during the day and once at night. Aim for 13–15 kg of forage per day, and ensure a variety of feed sources such as wheat straw, hay, peanut meal, and green grass to ensure balanced nutrition.
Additionally, supplement the diet with calcium, phosphorus, salt, and trace minerals. Cattle require about 0.4% calcium and 0.3% phosphorus in their daily feed. Since roughage alone may lack these nutrients, especially in winter, add 10 g of calcium, 5 g of phosphorus, 30–50 g of salt, and some trace elements daily to support bone development and overall health.
Provide warm water (around 25°C) instead of cold water, and consider adding a small amount of salt or crushed beans to enhance hydration and digestion.
For concentrated feed, mix 40% corn, 20% soybeans, 10% bran, 10% barley, 10% soybean meal, and 10% scraps, soaking them in warm water before feeding. Offer 0.5–2 kg of this mixture daily, adjusting the amount based on the animal’s age, condition, and stage of production. Increase feed quantity for young calves, pregnant cows, and thin animals.
Finally, maintain good hygiene. Clean the barn regularly, remove manure, and keep the area dry to prevent foot diseases. Each day, take the cows out into the sun and brush or scrape their bodies to promote circulation and reduce the risk of sores. These practices will help keep your herd healthy and productive throughout the winter.
