Management techniques of strawberry after picking

After harvesting strawberries, proper post-harvest management plays a crucial role in determining the yield and quality of the next growing season. It's essential not to neglect this phase, as it directly impacts the health of the mother plants and the development of future crops. First, it's important to prune the stems and remove old leaves. Once the fruit has been harvested, the remaining stems should be removed promptly, and any dead or yellowing leaves should be cleared away. This helps the mother plant focus its energy on recovery and growth, ensuring better performance in the next cycle. Second, effective fertilization and irrigation practices are key. From late September to early October, apply 20-25 kg of compound fertilizer per 667 square meters. Additionally, spray the leaves with a 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution two to three times to support healthy growth and promote flower bud differentiation. This also enhances the plant’s ability to survive winter cold. The compound fertilizer should be applied in shallow trenches around the roots, about 20 cm from the base. Before the first frost, apply a wintering fertilizer consisting of 500 kg of human manure and 15 kg of superphosphate per 667 square meters. Mix it well and apply it after digging small trenches. After harvest, reduce watering frequency and amount to prevent excessive stem growth. Just before freezing, you can combine the winter fertilizer with a final watering to help the plants prepare for winter. Third, soil cultivation is necessary. Before new runners begin to develop, the soil around the plants should be loosened and mounded up. However, make sure the soil layer doesn't cover the seedlings completely, as this could lead to bud rot. Proper soil aeration helps maintain root health and encourages strong plant growth. Lastly, pest control is an ongoing task. Common pests during the growing season include locusts, red spider mites, and larvae of the cutworm (Spodoptera litura). If infestations are detected, aphids can be controlled using 20% imidacloprid or 25% cypermethrin diluted at 1,000 times. Red spider mites can be managed with 2.5% abamectin or 73% fenoxycarb at 2,000 times dilution. For cutworm larvae, a 5% chlorantraniliprole solution or 2,000 times diluted chlorfluazuron can be used effectively. Regular monitoring and timely application of these treatments will help keep the crop healthy and productive.
