Autumn and winter mushrooms mushrooming management

In the early stages of mushroom cultivation, it's essential to manage the temperature difference between day and night. During late autumn and early winter, days are relatively warm while nights are cold. During the daytime, the plastic film helps maintain an internal temperature that is 2–3°C higher than the outside. Once it gets past 10 PM, the film should be removed to quickly lower the temperature. This temperature fluctuation encourages the formation of primordia on the surface of the mushroom logs, which will eventually develop into mushroom buds.
Next, maintaining proper humidity in the growing area is crucial. After the color change occurs, the relative humidity inside the mushroom chamber should be kept around 85% initially. As the mushrooms begin to form caps and stems, the air humidity should be reduced to about 80% to avoid excessive moisture that could lead to rot or disease.
Creating a balanced dry-wet cycle is also important. In the early phase of mushroom growth, the fungus logs contain enough moisture to support the first flush of fruit bodies. Avoid over-watering during this time. After harvesting the first batch, stop watering for a few days, ventilate the area, and allow the surface of the logs to dry for 1–3 days. Then, cover them again with the film to raise the temperature and encourage mycelial growth. Within 2–3 days, white mycelium will appear on the remaining mushrooms. At this point, mist the logs lightly to increase humidity, lift the film for ventilation, and raise the temperature to stimulate the next round of fruiting.
Good ventilation is necessary to prevent deformed mushrooms. When temperatures exceed 23°C, ensure daily ventilation in the morning, afternoon, and evening. If the temperature drops below 17°C, one ventilation session per day is sufficient. Maintaining proper airflow and moisture levels throughout the fruiting stage is key to healthy mushroom development.
Mushrooms require adequate light but not direct sunlight. The ideal light intensity allows you to read small print on a newspaper inside the growing room. This level of illumination supports proper fruiting without causing stress to the mushrooms.
Lastly, to prevent bacterial infections and extend the life of the fungus logs, regularly spray the walls, structures, and floor with a 500-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim wettable powder or a 0.1% lyosol solution. This helps maintain a clean environment and reduces the risk of contamination.
