The blue peacock, also known as the Indian peacock, is not only a stunning ornamental bird but also a unique source of delicious meat. Han Junfeng, a former worker from Suibin Farm, has been raising a group of blue peacocks since 2000, and today his flock has grown to over 100 birds. Through years of experience, he has developed effective techniques for breeding, hatching, and raising blue peacocks in northern cold regions. He now runs a successful blue peacock farm that sells eggs, young birds, adult peacocks, and various peacock-related products. Here are some key technical insights he has shared:
**1. Feeding and Diet Formulation for Blue Peacocks**
The main feed mixture consists of: 30% corn flour, 10% sorghum flour, 20% soybean cake, 10% bran, 22% barley residue, 4.5% fishmeal, 3% bone meal, and 0.5% salt. Supplementary feeds include bone meal, calcium carbonate, shells, trace elements, and a variety of vitamins. Green feed should be chopped and mixed or fed separately. Pellets are a good base, while oil crops like pockmarked and suzi can be used as winter supplements. During the breeding season, moulting, or brooding periods, it’s important to add vitamin B1, B2, E, shell powder, and mineral feed to support their health.
**2. Breeding Techniques**
- **Breeding Season**: Blue peacocks typically breed between June and August. However, under controlled conditions, this period can be extended.
- **Estrus and Courtship**: Male peacocks display their vibrant tail feathers in a fan-like shape, known as “opening the screen,†to attract females. They shake, scream, and repeat this behavior for several minutes, drawing females closer.
- **Mating**: The ideal male-to-female ratio is 1:3 to 1:5. Mating usually occurs 15 days before egg-laying, and a sand pit is often provided for nesting. Eggs must be collected regularly to prevent damage.
**3. Incubation Methods**
- **Natural Incubation**: Hens such as native chickens or quails are commonly used. Each hen can incubate 4–6 eggs at a time. They are released twice daily for defecation and feeding, and eggs are checked on day 7, 14, and 21 of the 26–28-day incubation period.
- **Artificial Incubation**: Specialized incubators can be adapted for peacock eggs. Proper disinfection and temperature control are essential for successful hatching.
**4. Brooding Management**
- **Housing**: Young peacocks are kept in small groups for easier management. The environment should be clean, dry, and well-ventilated. Cages with dimensions of 250x200x60 cm are suitable for the first 20 days.
- **Temperature and Humidity**: For the first 10 days, maintain temperatures between 34–38°C, gradually decreasing to 24°C by day 30. Humidity should stay around 60–70%.
- **Feeding Schedule**: Feed 4 times daily for the first 10 days, then reduce to 3 times a day. Include cooked eggs, minced meat, green feed, and supplements.
- **General Care**: Keep the density low, provide free access to food and water, and ensure a quiet environment. Regular cleaning, deworming, and disease prevention are crucial.
**5. Adult Management**
- **Growth Period**: From 61 days to adulthood (around 2 years), peacocks need space with perches and a netted outdoor area. Feed them twice daily and monitor weight regularly.
- **Laying Period**: For laying peacocks, maintain a 1:3 to 1:5 male-to-female ratio. Provide shaded areas, clean environments, and adjust diets to meet nutritional needs during breeding.
**6. Seasonal Management**
- **Spring**: Increase protein and vitamins; ensure nests are clean and accessible.
- **Summer**: Focus on high-energy feeds, increase green feed, and keep the area cool and clean.
- **Autumn**: Reduce feed during moulting. Use zinc oxide additives to speed up feather loss, and enhance diet with proteins and vitamins to promote regrowth.
- **Winter**: Boost grain and oilseed intake, and use bedding to keep the floor warm while ensuring proper ventilation.
