The temperature difference between day and night plays a crucial role in the development of muskmelons, especially in terms of sugar accumulation. A significant diurnal temperature variation helps the plant store more sugars during the day and slow down respiration at night, which enhances sweetness. During the fruiting stage, it is ideal to maintain a large temperature gap. Typically, daytime temperatures should be kept between 30°C and 35°C, while nighttime temperatures should range from 13°C to 14°C, resulting in a temperature difference of around 16°C to 18°C. This environment promotes optimal sugar production and improves fruit quality.
In addition to temperature control, managing fertilization is another key factor in enhancing the sweetness of muskmelons. It's recommended to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and instead focus on organic alternatives. Organic manure, such as chicken manure and soybean cake, provides essential nutrients while improving soil structure. For best results, apply approximately 15 cubic meters of chicken manure per mu and 100–150 kilograms of soybean cake. This approach not only supports plant growth but also contributes to better flavor and higher sugar content.
However, it's important to balance nutrient application. Increasing potassium levels in soils with low potassium content can actually reduce sweetness if not managed properly. Therefore, during the fruiting period, the use of nitrogen and potash fertilizers should be reduced. In the early stages, you can apply 8–10 kg of potassium fertilizer per mu or 20 kg of high-potassium compound fertilizer. This helps support fruit development without overloading the plant with excessive nutrients.
Water management is equally critical. Excessive watering during the ripening phase can dilute the sugars in the fruit and even lead to “watermelon rot.†Especially in the 10 days before harvest, it’s essential to regulate water supply carefully. Limiting irrigation at this stage helps concentrate the sugars and improve overall taste.
Light exposure also has a major impact on muskmelon quality. Ensure that the greenhouse film is clean and free of dirt to maximize sunlight penetration. Remove shaded leaves that block light from reaching the fruits. This improves air circulation and allows the plants to photosynthesize more efficiently, further boosting sweetness.
Harvest timing is another vital aspect. Muskmelons typically take 30–35 days to fully mature, during which time they develop their full sugar content and rich flavor. However, many farmers harvest early to meet market demands, which significantly reduces the fruit’s sweetness. Proper harvesting at the right time is the most fundamental practice for ensuring high-quality, sweet muskmelons.
By combining these practices—optimal temperature control, balanced fertilization, careful water management, sufficient light exposure, and timely harvesting—you can greatly enhance the sweetness and overall quality of your muskmelons.
