Tea production spring management points

Due to the unusually warm winter last year, the accumulated effective temperature has been higher than usual, which may lead to an earlier harvest of this year's spring tea. It is expected that new tea picking will begin before March 20, marking a "short three springs" period. This early start is not favorable for the overall production of spring tea. Currently, the tea industry is facing three major challenges: 1) tight timing for applying bud fertilizer, 2) limited time for pruning, and 3) a time-consuming task of planting seedlings. To overcome these challenges, it is essential for tea growers to take immediate action to ensure a successful spring tea season.
First, it's crucial to apply the bud fertilizer as soon as possible. The best time to apply the fertilizer is before March 5. Use 50 kg of Mushi compound fertilizer per acre, and apply it using the hole method. In the fall of 2006, when tea plants were planted on April 20, a nitrogen fertilizer was applied once, with 7.5–10 kg per acre, mixed with water.
Second, pruning should be done promptly at the beginning of the year, no later than March 5. For areas with severe pest issues or poor growth, heavy pruning is necessary. For young tea plants, annual cut height should be 25–30 cm, while two-year-old plants should be pruned to 40–45 cm. Special attention should be given to white tea plants. Young plants (1–2 years old) should not be pruned before spring, as improper pruning can severely affect crown development and delay production. Pruning should follow the picking schedule after the spring tea harvest.
Third, planting tea seedlings must be rushed. With the arrival of spring and increased activity in nature, planting must be completed by March 10. Both large-scale planters and individual growers need to work quickly to finish the planting and filling tasks.
Lastly, be cautious about the risk of winter cold. Although the winter was warm, it's important to avoid repeating the losses from 2004. Monitor weather forecasts closely and take preventive measures such as covering with grass, shade nets, or using water sprays to protect the tea plants and reduce the impact of late frosts. Proactive planning and timely actions are key to ensuring a healthy and productive spring tea season.
