Cows suffering from multiple bezoars in their bodies often exhibit a range of symptoms. They tend to eat less grass, drink more water, and appear weak or undernourished over time. These animals may show reduced mobility, frequently make squeaking sounds, have restless sleep, and display redness in the eyes. Additionally, they may experience hair loss on their bodies and have elevated body temperatures. When a cow is slaughtered, it's important to carefully examine the gallbladder, bile ducts, and hepatic ducts for any presence of stones. If found, these should be removed immediately to prevent further complications.
Fresh bezoars typically have an oval, irregularly spherical, or triangular shape, with some appearing tubular or granular. Their size varies, and the surface color ranges from yellow to brownish-yellow, with some being pale yellow. The surface is slightly shiny, soft, and easy to break. When cut open, the interior reveals a layered structure, with alternating yellow and brown bands. After removal, the bezoar should be wrapped in a thin film, then covered with straw or rushes and left to dry naturally. Alternatively, it can be wrapped in several layers of paper and placed in a lime tank to ensure slow drying. It's crucial to avoid using wind, sunlight, fire, or electric baking, as these methods can cause the bezoar to crack or change color.
A high-quality fresh bezoar is plump, has a brownish hue, and feels light and crisp. Its surface is smooth, with a clear, well-defined cross-section pattern. It should have a cool, refreshing taste, slightly bitter at first but sweet in the end. When chewed, it doesn't stick to the teeth and gradually melts in the mouth.
It’s important not to smoke or fumigate niuhuang (bezoar) with sulfur during the drying process, as this can degrade its quality. The highest grade of dried bezoar should be clean, free of impurities or blood clots. Store it in a tin or wooden box lined with cotton, soft paper, or rushes, and keep it in a cool, well-ventilated, and dry shaded area. Avoid placing heavy objects on top or exposing it to vibrations to maintain its integrity.
