Films cover the yield of leek

Due to natural wind barriers on the northern side of the river, leeks in the northern part of Yunnan thrive well, while those in the southern, eastern, and western regions tend to grow poorly. To address this issue, Zhang Zhaogong, a vegetable farmer from Wenjia Street in Shouguang City, Shandong Province, applied a smart mulching technique in southern Yunnan. By carefully covering the leek beds with mulch, he effectively raised the temperature on the southern and eastern sides of the plants, ensuring uniform growth and significantly boosting the yield. In this method, a 50-60 cm wide mulch was placed along the southern edge of the leek bed, with soil pressed against the south side of the mulch. The northern side remained unsecured to allow heat to accumulate in the southern area, enhancing the growing conditions for the leeks. As the leeks grew, the mulch gradually shifted toward the south due to the pressure from the plants. Once the leeks reached a height of about 50 cm, the mulch had almost fully moved to the southern side without causing any damage or bending the plants. Additionally, a 1.2-meter-wide mulch was placed on both sides of the leek rows to further raise the ground temperature and encourage better growth. The same covering technique was used, but when pressing the mulch, it was secured against the film side to keep it in place. Because the space was limited, the temperature rarely exceeded 30°C, so the winter mulch did not scorch the leeks. This innovative approach has proven effective in improving leek growth in areas where natural conditions are less favorable.
