How to use fertilizer in spring?

As potted plants spend a long time indoors during the winter, their growth potential is naturally reduced. Their new shoots, tender leaves, young stems, seedlings, and roots become more fragile. Applying concentrated or raw fertilizers at this stage can easily cause fertilizer burn, damaging the buds and shoots. Therefore, when fertilizing in early spring, it's essential to follow the principle of "small amounts, diluted fertilizers, and gradual increase." It's best to use well-composted liquid fertilizers during this period, as they are gentle on the plants and help improve soil quality. Fertilization should start slowly—once every 10 to 15 days is typically sufficient.
Fertilizing should be done in the evening on a sunny day, as this allows the plants to absorb nutrients more effectively without the risk of overheating. When fertilizing, there are four key points to keep in mind:
1. Avoid watering one or two days before fertilizing so that the soil is slightly dry, helping the plant absorb the fertilizer solution more efficiently.
2. Loosen the soil before applying fertilizer to ensure the solution can penetrate deeply.
3. Apply fertilizer around the edge of the pot rather than directly on the foliage or the base of the stem, as this can cause damage.
4. Water the plants the next morning after fertilizing, and loosen the soil to improve air circulation and promote healthy root development. For young plants or those with underdeveloped roots, it's best to avoid fertilizing until they are stronger.
In addition to fertilizing, proper watering in early spring is crucial. Avoid overwatering, as many plants have just started to come out of dormancy and don’t require large amounts of water yet. With lower temperatures and slower evaporation, excessive moisture can lead to poor soil aeration, root rot, leaf drop, and even plant death. As spring progresses and temperatures rise, watering should gradually increase. In warmer regions with higher sunlight and evaporation rates, more frequent watering is needed.
The general rule for watering in spring is “don’t overwater, don’t let it dry out completely, and ensure proper drainage.†Watering should be done before noon, and the soil should be loosened after each session to maintain good airflow. In areas where spring is dry and windy, misting the leaves and branches can help increase humidity and support plant health. By following these practices, you can help your potted plants thrive as the season moves into full bloom.
