In early spring, the temperature is still relatively low, and scutellaria baicalensis (Huangpi) remains inactive, growing at a slow pace. Proper feeding and management during this period are crucial to ensuring that Huangpi starts eating earlier, which directly impacts aquaculture productivity and profitability. Given the low temperatures and limited sunlight in early spring, it's essential to implement specific strategies to encourage early feeding and improve overall results.
First, focus on insulation.
During the early spring season, water temperatures are still cold, and Huangpi activity is minimal. In artificial breeding environments, maintaining an optimal microclimate is essential. To raise the temperature in Dianchi Lake, you can build simple wooden or bamboo structures over smaller pond areas. Cover these with a drip-free plastic sheet or regular agricultural film. When the wind is strong or the weather is particularly cold, cover the pond with the film. On calm days, remove the film during midday to allow for heat accumulation and promote photosynthesis in aquatic plants. This helps create a more favorable environment for Huangpi to become active.
Second, apply appropriate warming techniques.
In early spring, many farmers use deep-well groundwater, which typically has a temperature above 10°C. If hot springs or warm springs are available nearby, they can be used as a natural heating source. Additionally, factory cooling water can also serve as a warm water supply if accessible. Water should be changed every 5 to 7 days, replacing about half of the existing water. However, it’s important to ensure that the temperature of the added water doesn’t exceed 3°C higher than the lake’s current temperature. If the water is too warm, let it sit in a reservoir for a while to cool down before introducing it into the pond.
Third, provide suitable feed.
When Huangpi begins to eat in early spring, it requires live food to stimulate its appetite and restore its energy. The best option is live quail, followed by mealworms, snails, and other similar organisms. Feeding live bait for about a week helps adjust their feeding behavior and improves their health. As Huangpi becomes more active, gradually introduce them to feeding stations. Monitor the amount of bait carefully—reduce it if there's leftover the next day, and increase it if all the bait is consumed. Once a large number of Huangpi are feeding regularly, switch to a structured feeding system at designated food stations for better control and efficiency.
