How to improve the survival rate of bred brooding

The breeding of red junglefowl, commonly known as "Zhegu," has become a promising poultry farming project in recent years. However, due to the limited knowledge about this species, many farmers face challenges when starting. To help reduce these difficulties, we're sharing some practical experience on raising Zhegu. First and foremost, proper disinfection is essential before bringing in the chicks. Clean the brooding area thoroughly, place the cages, feeders, and water troughs inside, then close all doors and windows. Use 20 grams of potassium permanganate and 40 ml of formaldehyde per cubic meter for fumigation, leaving it for 24 hours. Afterward, open the windows to ventilate and eliminate the odor. Finally, spray the area with a disinfectant solution twice more to ensure cleanliness. Temperature is one of the most critical factors that influence the survival rate of young Zhegu. Two days before hatching, start heating the room and adjust the temperature to around 34–35°C. Ensure the heat source is placed properly, such as on a chimney, to avoid any risk of poisoning. The thermometer should be at the same height as the chicks' heads. Humidity should be kept between 60% and 70% during the first week and gradually reduced to 50–60% after that. Excessive humidity can lead to coccidiosis and respiratory issues, while low humidity may cause dehydration. Chicks must drink boiled water within 24 hours of hatching. Boil the water and cool it down to about 36°C. Add 1 gram of multi-vitamin powder per liter of water and let them drink it continuously for three days. Avoid giving them water immediately after hatching. Once they are ready, introduce them to food. On the first day, mix cooked eggs with feed. For every 100 eggs, add 2–3 pieces of cooked eggs, mix with a little water to form moist pellets, and spread them on paper for easy access. Keep this method for the first three days, then switch to feeding troughs. Due to the high temperature and humidity, feed should be given in small amounts and frequently to prevent mold growth. Good ventilation is crucial during the brooding period to promote healthy growth. If possible, install a fan to maintain fresh air. To keep the environment clean, remove droppings twice daily. Overcrowding can lead to fighting and disease, while under-population wastes space and increases costs. A general guideline is 80 chicks per square meter for the first 10 days, and 50 per square meter from 11 to 30 days old. Lighting plays a significant role in the development of Zhegu. For the first two weeks, provide 24 hours of light per day, then reduce it to 16 hours thereafter. The lighting intensity should be about 3 watts per square meter. Too much light can cause stress or pecking behavior. At 20 days old, you can stop the lighting. When trimming the beak, use scissors and only cut the tip without damaging the flesh. From day 2 to day 6, give the chicks Enrofloxacin (0.25%) in their drinking water to prevent white diarrhea. At 8 days old, vaccinate them against Newcastle disease using the II strain. Between 2 to 3 weeks, administer 20 million units of penicillin per dose to prevent bacterial infections and coccidiosis. After 3 weeks, continue with Norfloxacin or Enrofloxacin in their water to prevent Salmonella. Disinfect the area twice a week during the brooding period, and increase to once daily if an outbreak occurs. By following these steps carefully, farmers can significantly improve the success rate of raising Zhegu and enjoy better returns from this emerging poultry venture.
